Happy & Healthy Campers
Our Billi and Bernie Marcus Health Center
Our goal at Camp Barney is to provide the safest and healthiest environment for your child! Our state-of-the-art Billi and Bernie Marcus Health Center is staffed by a resident physician and three to five registered nurses, all of whom live at Camp and are on-call 24 hours a day. Staff are fully equipped to handle a range of medical and dietary issues, and we will work closely with each family to assure that your child feels comfortable and safe at Camp. Several additional medical care facilities are readily available and can be reached within four miles of Camp in Cleveland, 25 miles away in Gainesville, and 60 miles away in Atlanta.
Your camper’s health and safety are of the utmost importance to us, and safe medication administration is our highest priority. We work with True Pharmacy. They will deal with your insurance provider once the prescriptions are received and notify you if any complications arise. They also prepare medications in daily dose packs ready for our safe administration. This includes controlled substances as well as over-the-counter medications.
Please follow these instructions to order your prescriptions from True Pharmacy. If you would like to send over-the-counter medications directly to camp, you must follow these instructions.
Please remember, the ONLY medications that we will receive at the buses are EMERGENCY medications, inhalers and injectables. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email us at: email@example.com.
For each child enrolled, the parent (or legal guardian) must attest that all immunizations required for school in the state of Georgia are up to date including the actual date (month/year) of last tetanus shot. Any requested medical exemptions must be signed by a doctor within the past 12 months. Only medical exemptions approved by the MJCCA will be allowed. It is the responsibility of the parent (or legal guardian) to update the file when the health records change.
Mental Health Support
Community Care Team & Gail and Lyons Den
At Camp Barney we know it is vital that all campers have access to mental, social, and emotional support while at camp.
Our Community Care team of licensed therapists and mental health professionals is on-site all summer to provide mental health and emotional support for campers and staff. We are grateful for a Yedid Nefesh grant from the Foundation for Jewish Camp, funded by The Marcus Foundation, which helped us expand our Community Care program.
The Gail and Lyons Den, affectionately known as “The Den,” is our new sensory cabin. Using proven sensory methods, “The Den” is an ideal space for campers to process emotions and take needed breaks, and is also home base for the Community Care team. “The Den” was funded by Gail and Lyons Heyman and a Yashar matching grant from the Foundation for Jewish Camp, in partnership with The Harry and Jeannette Weinberg Foundation.
Camp Barney Medintz recognizes the importance of having this amazing space where kids can receive assistance from our professional staff, get a respite if camp life ever feels overwhelming, learn coping skills, or just chill out. We are fortunate to have this mental, social, and emotional support network at Our Summer Place.
Healthy Options at Our Dining Hall
Our 18,000 sq ft. historic timber Alterman Lodge (dining hall) is a centerpiece of life at Camp Barney. It truly embodies our sense of community, and the food’s pretty great, too! Three meals each day are served family-style from our kosher kitchen, and a host of options are available for each child – whether they have serious food allergies, dietary concerns, or are just a plain picky eater.
