What Being Jewish Means To Us
Camp Barney is the residential camp of the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta. We are pluralistic, and we organically weave Jewish culture into many aspects of daily life at camp, such as using Hebrew words for various areas of camp, saying blessings before and after meals, sharing beautiful Shabbat traditions together, and learning about and celebrating Israeli life and culture.
There is no requirement for staff to identify as Jewish or connect to Jewish culture or ritual in a particular way. Camp Barney welcomes anyone who respects our values and mission.
Our Summer Place
Located in the North Georgia mountains on 540 spectacular acres surrounding two private lakes, campers come to CBM from all around the country to experience the magic of “Our Summer Place.” Our beautiful facility also includes two swimming pools, 60 camper cabins, a state-of-the-art health center, 11 high ropes activities, a 32-horse equestrian center, an open-air chapel, amphitheater, and so much more.
Available Positions
At Camp Barney Medintz, each cabin has a daily schedule of activities and travels around camp together as a family unit, visiting various program areas and learning new activities from our specialist staff members. Cabins are comprised of ten campers (on average) and two counselors who all eat, sleep, and play together. Our staff are hired for one of two primary categories:
Counselors: Counselors are assigned to a specific cabin group. You will live in a cabin with your campers and participate in activities together with your group. You are the role model, parent, big sister or brother, friend, and caretaker for your campers.
Specialists: Specialists are assigned to a specific program area. You have skills, experience, and passion for teaching and leading activities in one of our program areas—horseback riding, water activities, sports, arts & crafts, nature crafts (wilderness and high ropes), theatre, media, photography, dance, song leading, or Israeli culture. Specialists live in cabins with other specialists of similar age and gender.

Our Location
Camp Barney Medintz is located in Cleveland, Georgia in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. We’re only a few miles from town and access to a grocery store, fast food restaurant, and Walmart!
Georgia’s capital city of Atlanta is only 90-minute drive from camp.
And when camp is over, many of our staff choose to travel together or visit their camp friends around the country!
Time Off
Staff at camp have 1-2 periods off per day which they can spend relaxing in our air-conditioned staff lounge, exploring our beautiful camp property, or taking part in camp activities. Staff also have time off most evenings beginning around 10PM and extending to our camp curfew at 1AM. During that time, staff can head into town to shop or eat or hang out around camp.
Staff also have one day off per week. Most days off are approximately 30 hours long, giving staff plenty of time to travel to nearby cities like Atlanta, Athens, Chattanooga, or Asheville. We help organize carpools and provide other means of transportation to help staff get to Atlanta. Many staff also choose to use their days off exploring the Chattahoochee National Forest, which offers hiking, camping, rock climbing, tubing, and paddling. Of course, sometimes it’s just great to spend a day off hanging out in camp!
